In Secondary 3, my daughter began to experience difficulty grasping certain subjects and this led to a loss of confidence in herself.  Luke was introduced to us by a mutual friend and we started with Chemistry which my daughter particularly hated at that time.  I happened to overhear an online lesson one evening where Luke was working with her on a question.  He asked her to tell him what she understood about the question and the key concepts it was trying to cover.  She responded and he asked her to elaborate a little on those concepts she had identified.  Then he asked her what she thought would be the correct approach to solving the question and she responded.  Step by step, he led her to solve the question on her own.  I really like the fact that he took the time to discover her knowledge and abilities and then determined that the correct approach would be to help her tap her own knowledge and connect the dots instead of merely launching into model answers.  I still remember his words “I really don’t know why you need tuition”.  Just a little joke on his part, but such a confidence boost for my daughter.  More importantly, the process was quite fun.  My daughter also opted for a custom intensive Mathematics course over the Secondary 4 school holidays to make sure she was on top of things ahead of the exams.  She did very well for her o-levels and is still taking these hitherto “hated” subjects at JC.  Thanks to Luke, she has a much healthier approach to learning and this will stand her in good stead for the rest of her life.
